Larry started trumpet in the 7th grade, beginning private study in 1982 with Vincent DiMartino at the University of Kentucky through 1986. A world-renown musician, Vince is now a life-long friend, colleague, and provider of continued inspiration. Other major teachers and invaluable influences include Bobby Shew, Roger Ingram, Marvin Perry, and Dan Gosling.
In 1987 Larry enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served as an Administration Specialist at Headquarters USAF at the Pentagon. Upon completing that assignment and earning the USAF Achievement Medal and an Honorable Discharge, he returned to college to finish a B.S. in Music Education at the University of Indianapolis, and later earned a M.M. in Trumpet Performance from Butler University.
After arriving in Indiana in 1990 he established himself as a top-tier musician working with the Indianapolis Symphony, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and as a studio musician. Larry currently serves as Principal Trumpet with the symphony orchestras of Owensboro, Marion, Anderson, and Orchestra Indiana, where he also serves as Production Manager.
From 2007 to 2021 he was Adjunct Professor at the University of Indianapolis, teaching applied trumpet, coaching the UIndy Trumpet Ensemble, and performing with the UIndy Faculty Brass.
In 2020 Larry was a Visiting Lecturer of Trumpet at the University of Tennessee, where he taught the undergraduate and graduate students, and the solo class. From 2021-2022 he taught applied trumpet at the Music & Arts Technology Department of Indiana University on the campus of IUPUI as Associate Faculty.
He is the Chair of the Indiana chapter of the International Trumpet Guild Conference. He organized and hosted the 2017, 2018, and 2019 Indiana Trumpet Guild/University of Indianapolis Trumpet Conferences. His guest artists and clinicians have included Doc Severinsen, Rex Richardson, Ronald Romm, Aaron Romm, Scott Belck, Rob Parton, and Conrad Jones. He is also the ITG Affiliate Chapter Coordinator for the state of Indiana.
He is the creator and host of the interview podcast and radio show, studioHFL. Featured interviews include legendary musicians such as Ronald Romm, Doc Severinsen, Rex Richardson, Sergei Nakariakov, and Ryan Anthony.
Since 2021 Larry has received training in Suzuki Trumpet Books 1-4 through the Suzuki Association of the Americas, subsequently joining the faculty of the Indianapolis Suzuki Academy. He is dedicated to helping young musicians get the best possible start on trumpet with the Suzuki Method.
